Times Square Restaurants: You’ve Got To Check Out John’s Pizzeria
John’s Pizzeria may not sound fancy, but it’s quite an impressive experience, as Taylor writes. Not only is there a wide selection of wonderful food, but the atmosphere is amazing! It’s located just a block from Times Square in an old converted church with stained glass windows, lovely murals, warm lighting, and good dining music. It’s also within easy walking distance to many Broadway shows, so it’s the perfect stop on your night out!
John’s Pizzeria (260 West 44th St.) is more of a dining experience than the name lets on. The restaurant, located just a block from Times Square, is in a converted church, complete with stained glass windows. Upon entering, you find a small little bar that served as the entrance to the church. Walking forward, you are impressed with the exceptionally large space, complete with choir balcony and high ceilings with a gorgeous stained glass dome and depictions of the stars and the sky. The murals that surround you depict the life and times of New York City. The entirety of it gives it an ethereal, unearthly feeling. Now, what about the pizza? Well, here John’s Pizzeria really shines. While John’s Traditional (Mozzarella) may be the most popular, by far the best of the bunch is the Margherita; the fresh basil is simply succulent. For those wanting variety, the Whole Wheat Traditional has an interesting earthy taste and texture that couples nicely with the cheese. For those not interested in pizza, John’s offers several pasta and other Italian options, including paninis. For a really fun experience, however, try the appetizers. The Petes a Rolls stuffed with cheese, with your choice of sausage, peppers or spinach is a real treat. Being only a block away from many Broadway shows, it is not uncommon to see people come in just before the curtain rises to order a set of these rolls along with a roasted veggie platter as a light dinner. While they are open every day except Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas, there are some times better than others to stop by. During the week, stick to a mid-afternoon or late dinner (to avoid the pre-show crowds that descend on the place from 6-8). Weekends, mid afternoon (2-6), Saturdays, and anytime after 3 on Sundays will work. Booking ahead is out of the question except for large groups, so be prepared even in the best of times to wait a few minutes to be seated.
