New York Shopping Trips Absolutely Must Include A Visit To Domus!

It’s rare when you can find a shop that sells great items and is socially and globally conscious at the same time. Domus is such a store – the owners even take time each year to travel and find unique goods in developing countries. Part of the mission of the store is to improve the living conditions of those less fortunate around the world. It’s a place where you can find something good for your home and your heart, according to Denia:

Domus is a store I particularly like shopping at for gifts. It is located in my neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen at 413 West 44th, just west of Time Square. The store is owned by two women, Luisa and Nicki, who close the store usually at the end of January for three to four weeks in order to travel to remote parts of the world to bring back unique goods from developing countries. Part of the mission of the store is to improve the living conditions of depressed populations around the world by selling commercially viable items they produce. Items for sale might include: a hand-woven bag from Guatemala, a hand-knitted stuffed animal from Kenya, or a hand-woven pillow from Peru. This year they went to Afghanistan and one of the items they brought back was Arghand pebble soap. They actually look like beautiful pebbles you might want to collect and display. They would be wonderful in a guest bathroom. This summer I purchased a wedding gift there for a cousin. It was a red and white telephone wire bowl handcrafted in Africa. He loved it. And Domus even took care of shipping it to Minneapolis, saving me New York State Sales tax. Prices for their unique items range from modest to expensive. Unusual handcrafted objects are not only from developing countries but some are made by craftspeople living in the USA, as well as artists living right in Hell’s Kitchen. One artist whose work they carry carves graphite into unique objects like seahorses or coral which you can write with. Another makes picture frames out of salvaged wood. I always know I will find something special when I go shopping there. I usually stop in the store while walking my dog, who enjoys shopping there as much as I do. The women always have a delicious treat for her.
