New York City Tourist Attractions: Visit The South Street Seaport!
If you want someplace unique and different from the rest of the New York City sights, The South Street Seaport is a fun change of pace. With a lovely environment by the water, all kinds of fun shops, events, good restaurants, a famous museum, and free concerts, Ray says it’s one of his favorite places in the Empire State:
I enjoy going to the South Street Seaport. It has great historical value and is so different from the rest of the city. It feels quaint and slightly secluded. The best way to enjoy it is to walk around to get a feel for the environment. It’s great to look out into the water and relax. The mall that’s situated at the seaport is also lovely. There are a variety of shops and it is less crowded than the ones in midtown. There are also great shops all up and down the area and just the facades of these buildings are enough to put me in a good mood. The colors are vibrant but not gaudy. It’s especially fun to look out across the water at night and see the beautiful lights from the buildings clustered together. It’s great being there when there are ships docked in the port and you can admire their beauty. It’s cool to get a hot dog and sit on a bench and just soak in the history that surrounds this area. A visit to the South Street Seaport would not be complete without visiting its museum, which is comprised of several buildings from the 1800’s. Many events and programs are coordinated throughout the year. The seaport holds free concerts and events, especially in the summer and around the holidays. The human, singing Christmas tree is a must-see! Fireworks are another can’t-be-missed event. It’s easy to get here using public transportation. South Street Seaport is free and open to the public. The museum, however, has admission prices; you can purchase tickets in person. There are packages that include the galleries and harbor tours as well as individual passes to specific attractions. Any time of the year is fun to visit this historic site, but be forewarned: it can get mighty chilly in the wintertime. However, the joy from visiting more than outweighs this inconvenience.
