Samira’s review:

My favorite restaurant in New York City is Souen. It is a macrobiotic, natural food restaurant. It is located on 13th Street close to the corner of University Ave close to Union Square. As soon as you enter the restaurant there is a great atmosphere. The place is full of plants, and they have an immediately relaxing effect. The restaurant has two floors, but it is not too big – it’s cozy and the staff is very nice. The food is great and very tasty. There are plates with fresh fish and steamed vegetables, nutritious brown rice and great natural herb teas. The whole concept of the restaurant is based on the real traditional Japanese food and the management and cooks are doing a great job cooking food that is both very delicious and also very nutritious. The prices are reasonable, which really makes a difference in today’s economy. They can range anywhere from eight dollars for a plate to fifteen or twenty dollars for a really fancy fish plate. Another aspect that makes the experience pleasant is the way the food is presented. There can be slices of fresh lemon placed near a sautéed fish, or a bunch of fresh leaves with all kinds of colors covering a third of the plate in another dish. Some plates contain unusual items or vegetables that may be less popular in the eyes of the general public, but nonetheless, they are tasty and refreshing to the palate. Examples of these items are burdock, which is a very healthy and crunchy root, and daikon, which is a delicious white radish. Also seaweed and sesame seeds could also be added to certain plates. Overall, my experiences at Souen are very positive. I get to eat healthy food that tastes great, and I get to do it in a nice atmosphere for a reasonable price.
