The Frick Museum

What the Frick is that? It’s the Frick Collection, and it’s one of the best museums in New York City! On the Upper East Side of Manhattan to be precise. It has amazing artwork, a peaceful atmosphere, and even a lovely indoor garden with a huge fountain. Randy writes about it here, considering it one of the best getaways in the city. And it’s only $5 for admission!

The Frick Collection, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is my little getaway from the city. As a student, I really appreciate the price of only $5 for admission. Sure, there are a few museums in the city that are nominally free, but they ask for very steep donations and seem to be perpetually jam-packed full of people. The Frick is always quiet, and it’s not overwhelming in size. It’s possible to browse everything in the Frick in a long afternoon, so you leave with a sense of satisfaction, not wondering what you missed. Between the tranquil atmosphere and the stress-free navigability of the museum, you can really take it easy and have a leisurely day. Actually, the people at the Frick really strive to keep that calm and pensive ambiance, and for this reason, they don’t offer regular daily tours with someone shouting so everyone can hear. Honestly, this thrills me to no end, as I feel I finally have a place I can just sit and think quietly; a very rare thing in New York City! If you must have a guide, the Frick does offer private group tours on days when the museum is ordinarily closed, so everybody wins. The exhibits are amazing! They have particularly incredible displays of furniture and tapestries. There are entire rooms in which the walls themselves are original paintings. But the real gem of the Frick, the thing that makes it singularly remarkable among the other New York museums is the resplendent indoor garden at its center. The most striking feature of the garden is the enormous fountain in the middle, but surrounding it are gorgeous Greek statues that would be the prize of any collection. The Frick is just the perfect place to go to beat the rat race. Art aficionados will appreciate the masterpieces of artists like Rembrandt, Monet, and Renoir. But if you’re not an art buff, even just reading in the garden is a delight.
