The American Museum of Natural History
New York has so many great museums to choose between, but if you haven’t been to the American Museum of Natural History, you might want to take a day and give it a try! With a “suggested donation” as the entrance fee (except for special exhibits), it’s a great and educational activity that fits in your budget.

My favorite thing to do in New York City is visit the American Museum of Natural History. The museum is located on the Upper West Side and you can take the 1 train to 79th Street station or the B/C train to 81st Street station. I recommend taking the B or the C train for new visitors since the subway station is on the block of the museum and even has an entrance to the basement level where you can buy tickets and enter. The subway also has these wonderful mosaics of an underwater scene and a look into the Earth’s geologic layers, with fossil impressions all around it. It’s a great indicator that you’re at the museum. General admission to the museum is a suggested donation, so you can pay whatever you want (even a penny). To get into the special exhibits, you have to pay the ticket price. For newcomers, it may be worth it to just try and walk through the permanent collections of the museum since there is so much to see. The reason why I enjoy visiting the American Museum so much is because of the amount you can do there. I learn something new and discover a new nook I like to sit at each time. Besides the exhibits that are filled with information, there are a lot of other activities the museum offers that you may not know about. For instance, there are talks by well-known scientists held in the evening that are open to the public. You can buy a ticket for it in advanced and show up at the museum after hours. Topics range from those that are played out in the media, like climate change, to others that one may not think about as much, like the context of fossils in evolution. Another great event at the museum is jazz on the first Fridays of each month. In the Rose Center (the planetarium portion of the museum), at around 5 o’clock, a band plays in the open area at the bottom of the spiral walkway and refreshments are available for purchasing. Guests can sit around and mingle while enjoying some standards, wine, and cheese. However, the likelihood that you will find a good seat is pretty low since it often gets crowded pretty quickly. But that’s more a testament to how popular it is.
